Team Klebe and Team Boyce win 2019 Connect Hearing BC Masters

They started the event by scoring an 8-ender, so it does not come as a huge surprise that Team Klebe secured the 2019 BC Masters Women’s title.

A total of eight master men’s teams and 10 master women’s teams competed in Nanaimo at the 2019 Connect Hearing BC Masters Curling Championships from March 5-10.

An 8-ender, where a team gets all eight of their rocks in scoring position, is rare in league play and even more rare at a provincial championship.

Team Klebe from Chilliwack and Richmond curling clubs finished round robin play with eight wins and one loss, securing a bye to the final on Sunday.

A tiebreaker between Team McFadden and Team Lepine decided who would be in the semi final game on Saturday night, with Team McFadden just edging out the former masters champions Team Lepine for the chance to move on.

Team McFadden then scored a five-ender in the second end of the semi final against Team Gardner to help them on their way to a 12-8 victory and a spot in the final.

But it was all Team Klebe in the final. The team of Janet Klebe, Kerri Miller, Jane Adam and Laurie Shimizu scored four in the first end and stole three in the second end on their way to a 9-1 victory, with hand shakes taking place in the fifth end.

On the men’s side, Campbell River’s Team Boyce did not look like the favourites after round robin play. Tied for third place with a 4-3 record, the team of Lyle Boyce, John Lapointe, Don Pennell and Tom Green, hit their stride on Saturday, winning their tiebreaker against Team Smith 9-2. The Campbell River Curling Club team then eliminated Wes Craig’s Kerry Park team 6-3 to win a spot in the final against Team Shimizu.

The final was a close affair with Team Boyce just edging out Richmond’s Vic Shimizu rink 4-3.

Team Klebe and Team Boyce will represent BC at the 2019 Canadian Masters Curling Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from April 1 to 7.
